Udacity Will Fund 100,000 Scholarships As Part of the Pledge to America’s Workers

    IBL News | New York

Udacity announced yesterday its Pledge to America’s Workers job training initiative. Over the next five years, Udacity will fund 100,000 tech and analytics scholarships on its learning platform.

With this move, Udacity is joining more than 350 companies and organizations, including Google, Apple, and IBM in signing the White House’s Pledge to America’s workers –a project undertaken by the Trump administration.

“Udacity’s scholarships will equip America’s workers with the skills they need to succeed in high-paying, future-proof careers in fields such as front-end web development, mobile app development, and data analytics,” said Udacity’s new CEO, Gabe Dalporto.

The program will initially revolve around front-end web development, mobile app development, machine learning, and data analytics. (See image below)

The recipients of scholarships will be, according to Udacity, “low-income individuals looking to learn the in-demand skills needed to land higher-paying jobs and advance their careers.”

Applications will open in early 2020, although the company offered the possibility of pre-registering now through a website.

JetBlue Eases the Financial Burden of Their Crew Members Earning a Master’s Degree

    IBL News | New York

JetBlue is expanding its JetBlue Scholars program to provide crew members a way to earn online master’s degrees at discounted rates of $13,000 to $30,000.

Participants will be able to seek degrees in leadership, business, information technology, aviation management and liberal arts from City University of New York School of Professional Studies, Louisiana State University Shreveport, Thomas Edison State University, University of Maryland University College and Western Governors University.

Since launching the program in 2016, more than 185 employees have earned a degree and over 700 crew members are currently enrolled. The completion rate is 93 percent, and the average time to complete a bachelor’s degree is 16 months.

“Our partner institutions share similar values with JetBlue and together we’re removing some of the complexity from the process. The online format allows flexibility, and low costs combined with specialized support is a great combination for our Scholars to earn advanced degrees at their own pace. These new Master’s Pathways will open up even more opportunities for crewmembers,” said Rachel McCarthy, head of talent and learning at JetBlue.

The JetBlue Scholars program also utilizes alternative college credit options, including new technology-based learning platforms like Study.comSophia.org, and StraighterLine.com.

JetBlue has joined a growing number of companies to offer employees access to certificates and online degrees as a corporate benefit.

  • EdX Begins to Charge for Access to Graded Assessments

EdX Begins to Charge for Access to Graded Assessments

The edX organization has implemented a new revenue model on its catalog, based on charging to access graded problems. Anant Agarwal, CEO at edX, made the announcement today on the official edX blog.

Audit learners (free learners) will continue to access the core course content, including videos, resources, discussion forum, and practice problems, but they will need to upgrade to the “verified learner status” and pay a fee (usually $50 to $100) to unlock graded assessments.

Additionally, after the free course ends, users won’t be able to access content unless they upgrade into the paid option. This time limit feature will be set on most of the existing courses.  “Existing audit track enrollments will not be affected. Learners will be able to access all content in any course(s) they enrolled in prior to December 17, 2018,” edX explained.

With this model, edX expects to generate a 30% increase in its overall revenue, which will be split with partners, as sources told IBL News.

This change, aligned with the business practices of Coursera, Udacity and other competitors, comes after several months of exploring different revenue models and is part of edX’s strategy to become sustainable. Particularly, edX’s paywall will be similar to FutureLearn’s upgrading feature. Coursera was the first to charge for graded assignments three years ago.

During the testing time prior to the implementation, edX claimed that it didn’t receive negative feedback from learners, although some university partners complained about it during the last Global Forum conference in Boston last month.

“We have decided on a model that we feel will best drive edX forward while staying true to our mission,” explained Anant Agarwal. “We wanted to strike a balance of moving edX towards financial sustainability while maintaining a robust level of free access.”

Also, MITx shared his view. “We support edX in its mission and path. We are working to ensure we maintain the integrity of the learning experience for all learners under this updated model. Materials for over 2,600 MIT courses will continue to be available for free to all learners on MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW).”

Dhawal Shah, founder of Class Central, said “that edX’s paywall will now be higher than Coursera’s, especially since Coursera has born the brunt of criticism about restricting access to MOOCs, which many attributed to pressure from Coursera’s VC investors.”  “Strangely enough, with this change to edX, Coursera is now the MOOC platform that allows free users to go furthest before hitting a paywall.”
