    OPM

    “The right question about OPMs is whether they are a good fit,” stated expert Michael Feldstein.

    “OPMs are the modern enrollment managers,” said Harris Pastides, President of the University of South Carolina, and Randy Best, Chairman and CEO of Academic Partnerships.

    2U acquired a minority stake in Chicago-based Keypath Education, which provides a similar service. Additionally, it announced an MBA program with Tecnológico de Monterrey.

    Michigan Ross School of Business selected Noodle Partners to launch an online MBA program.

     

    MOOCs, DEGREES

    “These are online learning’s greatest hits,” showed Robert Ubell. Also, this expert explained that “MOOC platforms will provide full credit programs for a fee”.

    “MOOCs are alive,” stated Zvi Galil, pioneer of Georgia Tech’s OMSCS affordable degree, on a video interview.

    • The OMSCS degree will graduate 1,500 students per year in 2021.

    • Five top U.S. universities will launch five more low-priced master’s.

     

    RESEARCH

    Educause released a preview of its 2019 Horizon Report. Redesigning blended spaces is one of the key trends.

    Cryptocurrency company Ripple is expanding its blockchain research initiative with 11 new top universities.

    These are the most in-demand hard and soft skills of 2019: cloud computing, artificial intelligence, analytical reasoning, creativity, persuasion, collaboration…

     

    COURSERA, UDACITY, EDX

    Coursera and HEC Paris introduced a stackable degree model with a new specialization in design thinking.

    Udacity announced an AI-based program for matching candidates with its network of employers.

    Sebastian Thrun initiated an aggressive plan to transform Udacity, after the former CEO left in October. The company reported revenues of $90 million and claimed 10 million registered students.

    Job applicants should add online courses to their CV, explains an expert at edX.

     

    BLOCKCHAIN

    • A Community College issued 1,479 blockchain-based certificates.

    • MIT issued 2,000 blockchain-based certificates.

     

    INITIATIVES

    • UMass announced plans to launch a national online college focused on adults. It will compete with Arizona State University, SNHU, Purdue and Penn State.

    Arizona State University (ASU) is expanding Education for Humanity, an initiative to educate online refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Irak, Uganda, and Rwanda.

    Moodle unveiled Moodle Workplace, a subset of the features available in other products, notably Totara Learning, for organizational training.

    Universities and colleges are teaming up with boot camp companies to deliver tech training in web development and coding, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Vanderbilt University is a good example.

     

    INVESTMENTS

    Turnitin, which uses AI to scan students’ writing and code assignments to check for plagiarism, will be acquired by a media conglomerate for $1.75 billion.

    Instructure / Canvas LMS bought the Portfolium digital portfolios company for $43 million.

    The OPM market, which stands at $2.3 billion, can grow 12 % by 2020, said Eduventures.

    Grand Canyon Education picked up 17 partner institutions after acquiring Orbis Education Services for $362 million.

    “The next-generation model for MOOCs in higher education is to become a form of OPM providers, including the near-term focus on master’s degrees,” wrote expert Phil Hill, from e-Literate.

    AI

    Artificial intelligence in U.S. education will grow by 47.5% from 2017-2021. An expert takes a peek into examples of how AI is used in education.

    AI developed by Chinese companies will rock our world, and reshape teaching, said Dr. Kai-Fu Lee, best-selling author, and former Google’s China chief.

    MOOCS

    MOOCs should be understood as just as digital content rather than college educational experiences, writes Amy Ahearn, manager at +Acumen.

    MOOC top platforms grew their businesses by over 20% in 2018

    A 22-story tower in Beijing named the “MOOC Times Building” houses government supported incubator for edtech companies. It includes two tricked-out production studios to film and edit video for courses.

    COURSES

    Google has created an IT Support Professional Certificate program, designed to train anyone without any prior training or degree a Support Specialist in 8 to 12 months.

    Coursera added 675 courses, doubled down on the number of degrees, launched the first Bachelor’s degree, and reached 37 million learners in 2018.

    INITIATIVES

    Coursera launched a forum space for its global community of learners to ask questions and help each other out.

    EdSurge is redefining its mission on writing, research and events, after closing a $2.5 million fundraise and signing with new partners in China (JMD and TAL Education)

    INVESTMENT

    DataCamp, a New York-based provider of online data science and analytics courses that claims 3.3 million users, raised another $25 million.

    • Kahoot, an Oslo-based developer of a digital quiz tool popular with teachers, received investment support from Disney, and brought its valuation until $374 million.

    India’s Byju raised $540 million to expand globally with English classes.

    BUSINESS

    Michael Bloomberg will donate $1.8 billion to his alma mater, Johns Hopkins. This private donation, the largest ever to any educational institution, will allow this university to offer free scholarships.

    Udacity is increasing again the pricing of Nanodegrees, according to Class Central. For example, Blockchain Developer is jumping from $999 to $1998.

    MOOCs must overcome four challenges to survive: low completion rates, high cheating rates, lack of awareness about their existence, and unsustainable revenue models. Prof. Ignacio Despujol, an expert on MOOCs, gave an interesting talk about it.

    • e-Literate has posted a view of the 30 largest online enrollments systems in the U.S., with LMS usage and trends since 2012.

    ONLINE DEGREES

    The online degree market is entering an era characterized by a growing overlap with non-degree learning, MOOC-based degrees, and consumer preferences –analyzes Sean Gallagher in edSurge.

    MOOC-based degrees emerge as a new category in education. They are less expensive, stackable, free to audit and with a more flexible application process.

    Online degrees are under intense scrutiny. Georgia Tech’s model is an example to follow. An excellent analysis by Manoel Cortes, a software engineer, and online student.

    Non-degree online courses and programs are slowly remaking the online degree market, with their career advancement – oriented modular and flexible credentials.

    COURSES

    Coursera is preparing 100 new courses and 20 Specializations in Spanish. This catalog will include topics like artificial intelligence, web development, data analysis and more.

    Coursera’s co-founder Andrew Ng will teach, in early 2019, “AI for Everyone”, a non-technical course on artificial intelligence.

    Microsoft Launches a Series of 10 Courses about Cybersecurity on edX.org

    PLATFORMS

    Facebook has launched a free, open educational platform, which offers training in digital marketing and other career-focused skills. So far this site includes 13 ultra-short courses.

    • LinkedIn Learning is expanding its content library with five new partners, including Harvard Business Publishing.

    TECHNOLOGY

    Arizona State University (ASU) is going all in with adaptive and active learning – based degree programs after succeeding with several programs.

    Gartner has come out with the top tech trends for 2019
