The online gig work that has been a global lifeline for many people is increasingly drying up as AI replaces those tasks.
One example is the Kenyans who have been writing essays for cheating U.S. college students, as The New York Times describes in a report.
To date, thousands of well-educated freelancers from Kenya, the Philippines, and India have found opportunities in the digital gig economy.
Now that AI has arrived, it seems the good times are over.
Kenyans were also transcribing meetings on freelance platforms like Upwork and Fiverr and flagging Facebook posts to help the platform decide what could stay up. One after another, those opportunities have withered.
The global gig economy is severely impacted as AI has entered and taken large chunks of these labor markets.
“A.I. is coming for bankers, for accountants, it’s coming for engineers, and A.I. will come for architects,” said one of the affected gig workers. “It’s coming for everybody.”
